Third and Fourth Grade Teacher: Mr. Kyle Kohlmeier
In the third and fourth grade we work hard on reading, writing, science, math, spelling and all of the core subjects. Our classroom focuses on STEM projects that enhance the students understanding and make learning more enjoyable. Our first STEM project was the buoyancy experiment. Students were given aluminum foil and asked to create a boat that could float. After creating the boat, we tested each one to see which boat could hold the most weight before it sunk. One of our other experiments tested chemical changes while creating "fake snow" when the students combined shaving cream and baking soda. Then, we used the "snow" to make creative art projects!
We also try to do service projects for the community and the parish. We have collected canned goods for the St. Theresa food pantry and we teamed with the Kindergarten and cleaned up the school and church grounds. Each student collected trash and separated the recyclables to put in the proper containers. Making our service work fun helps the kids make meaningful connections to the importance of helping out and doing nice things for others.
In the 2nd semester we got brand new Chromebooks for every student in our class, making us 1:1 with devices! We have already improved our computer skills and are learning faster ways to type. The Chromebooks also improve student progress monitoring and assessment for quicker detection if a student needs some extra help. Our students can use Google Classroom to work on group projects and other assignments in class and outside of class on their home device. The group is already working on research projects to present to the class!
