Pre-k, kindergarten, first, and second grades combined their scientific powers to create and erupt a volcano in our classroom!! For three weeks, we studied what caused volcanos to form and erupt. We also learned about Mt. Vesuvius and the city of Pompeii. We squeezed soft boiled eggs to mimick lava oozing out from between Earth's plates. The unit concluded with a hands on volcano eruption.
First and second graders had a blast learning to make paper. Of course that could be because they got to make a mess by tearing paper into tiny pieces. They each made two circles of paper. One includes flower seeds that we will plant when it gets closer to spring.
Salem, Illinois, January 18, 2017 – Nate Gruen, a seventh grader at St. Theresa, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on January 18th. This is the second year in a row that Nate has won. Students answered oral and written questions on geography. The 10 finalists in the Bee were: Cheyenne Neff, Micah Sanderson, Olivia Ashby, Tristan Propes, Caroline Foltz, Ryan Wuebbels, Nate Gruen, Max Morton, Drew Beer, and Tyresa Tyler.
In addition to Nate Gruen (7th grader) winning first place, Caroline Foltz (6th grader) won 2nd place and Tyresa Tyler (8th grader) won 3rd place.
Schools around the United States and in five U. S. territories participate. Nate will take a written test; up to 100 of the top scorers on that test in each state will then be eligible to compete in their state Bee.
