St. Theresa Grade School and Apostolic Christian Academy Team Up in Sports
St. Theresa Grade School and Apostolic Christian Academy (ACA) in Salem have announced that they will form cooperative sports teams for the next two school years.
Athletic directors Mark Larimer of St. Theresa and Rissa Stratton of ACA report that their students will join forces in boys and girls cross country, boys basketball, girls volleyball and boys and girls track. Girls will be eligible to play on the boys basketball team. Bowling could be added if there is interest.
Larimer stated, “I think our sports teams at St. Theresa have a good reputation in the Oil Belt Conference for playing hard and giving their best effort, but our rosters are a little thin. We are excited to welcome the Apostolic Christian students and think they will add to the competitive spirit of our teams.”
Stratton added, “The students of Apostolic Christian Academy are very excited about joining forces with St. Theresa Grade School.”
The ACA athletic director commented, “Lots of changes are being made this upcoming school year. From remodeling of our school and daycare, having a new addition complete with a gym, to now coming together with St. Theresa to offer a sports program. I am anticipating the 2013 school year. I would like to thank St. Theresa for including us in their sports program.”
Larimer added, “We’ve been working well together so far, and I’m sure that will continue. They haven’t had a sports program and think it will enhance opportunities for their students. We’re thrilled to be able to have more complete teams. Younger students may not have to play above their grade level so much.”
St. Theresa is a member of the Oil Belt Conference, and the combined teams will continue to compete in OBC and SIJHSAA events. Apostolic Christian is completing work on an addition which will give the co-op teams two gyms in which to practice and play.
